Apple pens $56mil deal with 2G and 3G cell tech company

NoYes

InterDigital’s pockets are feeling a considerable amount fatter and its looking more and more like the European release of the iPhone may bring a 3G version of the Jesus-Phone. The deal is for InterDigital to supply Apple with “2G and 3G technologies” for seven years, hopefully by then we’ll have moved well past even 4G let alone even be thinking about 2G and 3G technologies.

Unless Apple is bringing back the old IIe’s with EV-DO Rev. A in 2014. InterDigital will specifically deal with bandwidth allocation, roaming, and power efficiency. There will probably also be some new packet encoding and delivery scheme.

So first thing’s first, what are the chances of the potential 3G iPhone not being HSDPA based, allowing for a Sprint iPhone? Also, will iPhoneSIMFree’s unlocking work with this new 3G version so “I can haz cheeseburger now,” no really so I can have an EV-DO iPhone so I might actually be able to be productive on it?
