News Flash 6/3/2007:

Update: 5/26/2007 Will the real iPhone release date please stand up?

AT&T sent out an internal memo advising all company owned retail employees that no additional vacation requests will be allowed during the iPhone launch period. This period extends from June 15th through July 15th. The company is referring to this timeframe as "the biggest selling period we have seen in a few years."

There is no way to validate any of this information – but it does seem to fall in line with everything we’ve heard thus far.

To: All Company Owned Retail Employees

Subject: iPhone Launch Period

Date: May 4, 2007

As previously announced, Apple and AT&T will soon debut the iPhone, which combines a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and breakthrough internet communications into one small and lightweight handheld device. The new AT&T has a multiyear, exclusive agreement to
provide U.S. service for the iPhone.

To ensure proper staffing during the product launch period, Sales personnel planning to take approved time off are encouraged to schedule their vacations before June 15 or after July 15 to participate in the iPhone launch.

Previously approved vacation will be allowed where voluntary rescheduling is not feasible

No additional vacation requests will be approved during the launch period (6/15 – 7/15).

I want to thank you in advance for your understanding as this is likely to be the biggest selling period we have seen in a few years.

Happy Selling,

oh - I might add that this supposed memo was sent to all company owned employees. Does this mean that non-cingular owned stores will not be getting the iPhone?!!

2 utsava 05.05.07 at 5:07 pm

Vincent, it has already been announced that the iPhone will only be available in 4 places:

cingular.com
Official Cingular Stores
Apple.com
Apple Stores

So yes, none of the “authorized cingular/AT&T stores will have the iPhone.

June 15th is the final day of WWDC07, makes sense to me.

utsava - that’s really bad because Arizona isn’t an AT&T town. Looks like I’ll have to camp out in Las Vegas on launch day if I don’t attend WWDC.

There are 3 Apple stores in town - but I just don’t know how Apple will provision the iPhone and setup new accounts. So many damn unknowns.

We’ll be getting a couple for the staff and move a few accounts over from T-Mobile.

I’m still convinced that it will likely launch on June 19. Apple is known for their Tuesday launches. The June 15 date would simply give them time to prepare the store for the iPhone.

Im here to say that i got official word from my good friend that works for att. He told me that its for sure that the iphone goes on sale friday june 15th. He also told me that att stores usually get about 15 phones when “the new ones” come out. He is expecting that his store is only going to get a handful…but he also said apple stores will have more than them. But being apple i dont know if thats the case here. I am calling in sick and camping out to get mine.

alex, can you check with your friend and find out how ATT will handle the whole number portability?

So here’s the question, what happens if I am currently with T-Mobile and want to switch to ATT and bring my number along? Will I be without service for an x-period of time while the number is being ported over - rendering my iPhone useless during that period?

Vincent, I believe during the # port process that you will be able to make calls immediately, but being able to receive calls on your # may take a few hours. Most articles I have read recommend to carry both your new and old phone until the new phone is fully functional. Number porting should not take more than 24 hours and in most cases is done within an hour or two.
