Pretty slick, just as Kevin said it would be.

This looks too much like it’s been designed iPod first, phone second – The required functionality of a phone is such that it needs to be at the forefront of a designers mind for it to be useable. Tacking on the ability to dial and make calls isn’t enough these days.

While the product displayed in the patent application is essentially an iPod mini (if you have an iPod mini nearby, look at it, and look at the actual patent pictures. They are identical, down to the headphone-with-remote jack that disappeared on the recent iPods and nanos.)

But, the SUBSTANCE of the patent covers something new. It is not a patent on the iPod mini. It is a patent on the use of zirconia as a case material, to make a case that is transparent to radio waves.

This could be something as simple as building in Nike+iPod functionality (i.e. no separate receiver needed,) or putting in Bluetooth, WiFi, Wireless USB, or, yes, even cell phone functionality. But the pictures don’t make it clear which is intended, and neither does the text of the patent.

Now, when we see an FCC filing (as all cell phone manufacturers are required to do, which include actual photos of actual hardware,) THEN we’ll have rock-solid proof. But I have a feeling Apple will ‘pre-announce’ the iPhone specifically so that they can have it be a surprise, and only file with the FCC AFTER the iPhone has been announced to the public.
