Wow, the advertising conditions in the UK are pretty strict! An Apple ad was pulled earlier this year, but now another iPhone 3G ad was pulled from UK TV because it apparently exaggerated the performance speed of the iPhone 3G.

The ad shows the iPhone speeding along between web pages and other applications super fast, but the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received complaints by 17 people that the ad was misleading.

Sure, the phone isn't really that fast, but hey they have to fit in a bunch of information in just 30 seconds. Actual load time does not bode well for spiffy advertising promos. And what sort of ad would be successful if all it showed was a web site loading? That's not exciting. Anyway, I thought this was ridiculous. What do you think about it? Oh, and watch the ad in question below:

Speaking as someone from the UK I don’t think it’s stupid at all. The ASA exists to stop advertisers bullshitting consumers to idiotic degrees. It’s a good thing they exist and don’t allow bare faced lying in advertising. It’s called protection of consumer rights.

Apple are a rich and creative company; I’m sure they can afford more ad time or failing that come up with a cleverer way of using the 30 seconds. ;)

I dont think this is stupid either - there showing things that clearly cant be done with the phone and its just lying…

Speaking as someone from the US, I can’t believe we’re so brainwashed/in denial/delusional, that not only do we condone lying we think it “ridiculous” when someone calls us on it. If truth in advertising is a myth here, it’s at least good to know others do have standards and the strength to set up a government that upholds them. How far is this from the people telling you, you can “most definitely!!!” afford that million dollar house? Isn’t this what did us, and now the rest of the planet, in?

Ridiculous???

Think twice
It’s just another day for you and me in paradise

I’m European but have lived in the US for 12 years. Only in the US can you bash others and lie in advertising. I switched from he iPhone to the BB Bold and for business, the BB is a much better device. The Bold doesn’t have the same cool factor, but I need to get shit done.

I think the “really fast” aspect was its downfall.

I live in London (UK) and I think these complaints are ridiculous, obviously adverts tend to exaggerate. Welcome to the advertising world! People who have been complaining should get a life!
