Analyst expects iPhone on other carriers with a year

If you are one of the many who wants an iPhone but doesn’t want to be on AT&T, at least one analyst thinks that you may get your wish soon. According to an analyst from, Piper Jaffray the iPhone may be on other networks soon.

Gene Munster expects the iPhone to hit other carriers in the U.S. within the next year. We may well hear more about the future of the iPhone in September at the Apple event.

Munster wrote, “For various reasons the company moved from an exclusive relationship with French wireless carrier Orange to a multi-carrier model. In France, the company now enjoys dramatically higher market share (in the 40 percent range vs. about 15 percent in ROW) than in countries with exclusive carrier agreements (such as AT&T in the U.S. where the iPhone has market share in the mid-teens). We believe Apple is seeing the increased unit sell-through more than offset the slightly (~10 percent) deteriorated economics per unit involved in non-exclusive agreements.” I have always said Apple needs more than one carrier in each country if it wants to grab lots of market.

There is allot of work to be done before this actually happens due to the fact that some telephone companies are CDMA, while others (including AT&T) use GSM. Another model may have to developed by Apple in order for other carriers to get a look in. So while it is hopeful that it will happen it is going to take a while.

I would expect current, dissatisfied (is that everybody?) AT&T users to show no loyalty to that carrier if a choice existed. I would barely pause to pee on AT&T’s grave if I were walking by.

Same. I have to carry two phones now – one that works as a phone and the iPhone which I love using for everything else. It’s been out long enough now on the AT&T carrier. Give a real carrier a chance to show how fantastic the iPhone really can be.

Hey people.. i must say at&T has the worst plans imaginable. I cant imagine someone with at&t. Everyday i think if should change over to at&t to have an iphone, but for the prices shown.. im come back to rreality.. not worth it with all the phoones out and capablitys out there

I really hope iphone will be available for SPRINT. I want an iphone but do not want to switch phone companies. Apple needs to hurry up and make it for SPRINT!!!!

I love Apple products, dieing to get an iPhone but will NOT go with AT&T – worst serve out there! CDMA is so much better and everyone agrees including tons of speed and drop call test and experts. I wanted to justify going to AT&T to get the iPhone but after hours and days of reading. I stayed with Sprint and found that Sprint and Verizon are the best, Verizon being the best but more expensive. PLEASE Apple, let everyone have an iPhone!!!

HATE AT&T seriously thinking of paying hefty cancellation fee just so I won’t have to deal with them anymore!

I hate AT&T and also paid a cancellation fee just to get away from there services. Please Apple let everyone sell your product.

I had ATT years ago, they really sucked, they thought they were doing you a favor by letting you use their crappy network and lousy, stuck up customer service dept. I agree with “Desertboy2″ I cant wait till the Iphone comes available to better carriers (sprint/verizon) I wont even slow down when I pass their grave, but if I had to stop, pissing on their grave would be a fitting end and I might feel a measure of satisfaction at their demise!

love it…..let At&t keep in the mix, the competition from all these carriers just makes for better deals for us consumer types. Can’t wait until Iphone is available for other networks besides At&t and verison!
