All you US and UK iPhone owners, spare a few moments for the poor Spanish cellphone-loving populous who, if carrier Telefonica had their way, would be able to buy the coveted handset this Christmas but, thanks to Apple being supposedly unable to supply sufficient stocks, will now have to wait until May next year. The rumour of shortages originated from Telefonica senior management, according to Spanish tech firm SevenClick, and the carrier is busily negotiating around Apple’s demand of a whopping 30-percent of subscriber revenue as their monthly tithe.
The loose-lipped exec also let slip that Apple have a 3G version of the iPhone in the timeline, and it’s that which will hopefully pacify the waiting Spaniards. Of course, that has not been confirmed by the Cupertino company themselves, and nor were there further details such as price, what type of 3G would be included (i.e. would it have HSDPA, which is currently spreading like wildfire across Europe) and what expectations of battery life might be. Although it seems unlikely, there’s also no clarification about whether the 2.5G and 3G iPhones would go on sale concurrently or whether the current model would be retired.
